Grammy Award winner, Lizzo, is known for her empowering hits like Truth Hurts and Good As Hell. One of the reasons why she was able to get on top of her game is because she walks the talk. Not only does she preach about self love, but she also practices it on herself. The singer-songwriter is not afraid to experiment with performance wear and daring silhouettes. On the contrary, Lizzo makes sure she pushes the envelope every time she presents herself to her audience. With that being said, it was a jaw dropping moment when she decided to wear a custom ensemble from a Filipino designer.

Earlier today, she posted a video on her Instagram a promotional video of her newest song, Rumors ft. Sasha Flute. In the video, she wore a custom Thian Rodriguez Manila signature vinyl leather ensemble with boots executed by MX Studio– all of which are Filipino brands. Learn more about how this collaboration happened with designer, Thian Rodriguez, MX Studio, and Lizzo’s stylist, Jason Rembert, by reading our exclusive interview below.

MEGAStyle: How did this collaboration with Lizzo happen?

Thian Rodriguez: The collaboration started when her stylist, Jason Rembert, DM’d me on Instagram asking if I can create a custom piece for Lizzo. Of course, without second thoughts, I said yes right away. After sending a couple of sketches and sample photos, we decided to do an all-black ensemble with silver metal details.

MS: What were the things you had to consider in making Lizzo’s ensemble?

TR: Lizzo is a singer and performer, the piece should be wearable and comfortable whenever she moves or dance. Plus, It should embody her fearless and bold personality.

MS: Will you be making Lizzo more custom looks in the future?

TR: I am looking forward to making more pieces for Lizzo and to other international artists. But for now, I have to keep my mouth shut.

MS: How did you feel when they contacted you?

TR: I felt overwhelmed and anxious at the same time, because when her stylist DM’d me I wasn’t able to respond immediately. I was 5 minutes late. This is not the first time an international stylist contacted me, but this is the first time an international artist actually wore my work. Thanks to her stylist for trusting my vision and aesthetic.

MEGAStyle: How is Lizzo’s style the same as your respective brands, Thian Rodriguez and MX Studio?

Thian Rodriguez: I want to believe that my brand, Thian Rodriguez, is for everybody. Whatever your sexual orientation is, shape, race, and color; because Thian Rodriguez is deeply rooted by brave and confident individuals who are unafraid to express themselves. And, that is why Lizzo’s is a perfect fit for my brand.

Maxine Santos: I think the same with her personality; very unapologetic and genuine.
