One exposé from the Los Angeles Times made a great impact on this year’s Golden Globes. If you’re wondering what happened to the biggest party in Hollywood, you’re in for quite a shock. According to the report, none of the 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a.k.a. HFPA, are people of color. On top of this, they also found that most of the members were not reputable figures in the entertainment—not even established actors.
The backlash, to say the least, was undeniable. Tom Cruise reportedly returned all three of his Golden Globes to HFPA. Joining the protest to boycott the Golden Globes and the HFPA is their long time broadcast partner, NBC. This is also the reason why there was no live telecast of the awards ceremony. Apart from losing their partners, they’ve also lost a number of their A-listers. None of the invited celebrities RSVP’d, so they had to proceed behind closed doors.
Despite everything that has happened to the Golden Globes, they still went on to announce the winners. In the HFPA live blog they wrote, “Congratulations to all nominees and winners, and a heartfelt thank you from all of us at the Hollywood Foreign Press to our incredible Grantees who joined us tonight in our celebration. We’ll see you here next year when we celebrate 80 years of the Golden Globes!” Find out who this year’s winners are.
