After experimenting with our hair over the past few years, we think it’s time to put the hair dye down. And, we’re not the only ones who’ve had enough. We’ve been seeing celebrities and influencers dying their colored locks back to brown. This includes Hailey Bieber, Due Lipa, and Bella Hadid. Like our favorite celebrities, we’ve tried hidden highlights, dip-dye ends, and a full hair color transformation. Dua Lipa and Jenny Kim even started the face-framing highlights trend of 2020, which lasted till 2021. But, now it’s all coming to an end.
Celebrities, influencers, and even we are opting for a more natural look. Gone are the days when DIY bleaching was on the agenda. The main reason? It’s simple, really. No one has the time to maintain colored hair anymore. Although, that doesn’t mean we’re going back to 2010’s ombre roots trend.
Those who are making the switch back to brown aren’t waiting for their hair to grow out before they do. Instead they turn to 2022’s hair color trend of the year, the “Expensive Brunette.” This isn’t your ordinary brown hair color, neither is it the usual ash brown balayage. The “Expensive Brunette” is a new mix of color that gives off a rich vibe. If you’re thinking of trying out the trend, then here are a few things to keep in mind.
What color is “Expensive Brunette”?
To achieve the look, your base hair color would either be only one shade lower or higher than your natural hair color. On the other hand, the color you use for your highlights should be the opposite of your base color. For example, if you chose a level lower than your natural hair color, then your highlights should be one to two levels higher than your natural hair color and vice versa.
You can play around with your brown tones for the “Expensive Brunette”, but the most important factor to consider is that you don’t go overboard. You need to make your hair look natural and lived-in.
Can I do this even if my hair is bleached?
The short answer is yes, but you may encounter a few problems. Bleach is forever until you chop it off. With that being said, you’re going to see your brown colored hair fade faster than usual. Even if you’re opting for darker hair, you’re still going to need purple shampoo and conditioner. You can even use a color retaining mask from time to time.
Is “Expensive Brunette” expensive?
Absolutely not. The irony is that this could be your most low-maintenance hair color yet. Unlike blonde or any of the other fashion colors (e.g. pink, purple, blue, or green), brown is fairly easy to maintain. Although it fades for bleached hair as mentioned earlier, the fading process usually takes a month. In comparison to purple hair dye, which could fade in a few days.
The amount of money you will save from going back to brown can be used in revitalizing your hair through treatments. You can finally restore your hair’s natural bounce and shine after years of bleaching.
