The Louis Vuitton S/S 2022 collection is the epitome of timeless fashion. Truly paying homage, these creations build off of the heritage left by its late creator, Louis Vuitton. The pieces are a mixture of what was in vogue in different periods. Contrastingly, it embraces today’s cultural zeitgeist but also transports you back in time—from the 90s to the Baroque Era.
For this collection, Creative Director, Nicolas Ghesquière, made use of a tension of opposing forces: present and past, construction and deconstruction, couture and casual, day and night, formal and simple, ball gowns from the Roaring 20’s married to urban wear. And although the premises where the collection is built off are contradictory, the wardrobe does not lack a sense of identity. At the core, its persona revolves around these: heritage, transmission and timelessness.
The use of archetypes from different generations and bringing them to a new light through modes of deconstruction and reconstruction is very in tune with the Maison’s 200th anniversary. It can be viewed as clothes that bring with them the past yet also tell a new tale.
To bring an image to the contrasting forces we keep describing, here are some of the design codes and key elements the Louis Vuitton S/S 2022 collection explored.
Embroidered Ball Gowns
Alluding to the crinolines of the roaring 20’s, this statement frock, called Ellipse dresses, are best described as romantic. Made from shredded chiffon and 19th century beads, it gives off a light ethereal look. It is usually best fashioned with tails, spences or pieces with embroidery as well.
Urban Wardrobe
Think urban wear with ceremonial guises and silhouettes. On top of that, also blur the lines between day wear and those customized for the nightlife. Here, there is no design code followed—just the marrying of two distinct styles and hitting off with sumptuous outerwear and sustainable denim.
English Embroidery, Lace And Embellishments
Layers, layers, layers. The Louis Vuitton S/S 2022 collection plays with delicate see-through fabric to create lavish layers that result in powerful feminine looks.
Formal Wear With An Evening Twist
Formal apparel takes on a new spin with jackets that sport luxurious brandebourg-like details, lace, leather elements and tails.
Sumptuous Uniforms With A Spin
Ever wonder what the 80s and vogue 19th century fashion would look like together? Look no further, Louis Vuitton S/S 2022 collection delivers with its polka dot style blouses and country style ruffle collars that carry rigid metal wires.
The Swing
This sumptuous carrier by LV’s Creative Director is a hop on the trend of elongated formats in bags. Albeit new, iconic elements remain—such as the S-lock exposure with a gold and silver finish.
Classic Petite Malle Reimagined
As aforementioned, this fresh batch pays homage to the Maison’s late creator for the house’s 200th anniversary. This is where the collection’s play on heritage and being timeless is epitomized. Ghesquière reimagines the classic trunk bag, Petite Malle, and like The Swing, adapts it to east-west proportions. Hence, the new moniker the East West Petite Malle.
This revamping also makes a great commemoration of the label’s 2 centuries of existence because Louis Vuitton himself built his impressive career as a fashion visionary by crafting luggages for the Empress of France, Eugenie de Montijo, in the early 1800s.
New Animations
The Louis Vuitton S/S 2022 collection features several new animations. There’s the Jerrycan which patronizes red, green and black hues that are set on the label’s signature monogram. This fresh animation gives birth to colorways for the well-loved Coussin and Cannes carry-ons.
In a fashion that epitomizes the Maison’s strong ability to elevate common fabric, like lace, to couture levels, Ghesquière introduces a new cut-out monogram signature that sports a 3D look. The iconic Cannes, Dauphine, Bucket PM and Petite Malle just got absolutely more sumptuous with the Monogram Lace.
The 80s are still ringing and it’s overtaking the classic capucines BB with a fair share of black polka dots printed on a matte white under layer. On the other hand, there’s also a less loud iteration that features a chic sophisticated black pleated malletage.
The latest animations are not only bound to the brand’s renowned purses, it also makes an appearance in eyewear that take inspiration from Venetian masks and Baroque art.
