Celebrating Filipino artisanship, the fair is back after a two-year hiatus.
After a long break due to the pandemic, MaArte at The Pen comes back to its home since 2017, The Peninsula Manila, Makati City. The fair, which is one of the fundraising efforts of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, will bring to the fore various thoughtfully made and intricately designed local merchandise, crafted in partnership with Filipina and Filipino artisans.
Happening on August 19 to 21, MarArte at The Pen 2022 will be ran by the Philippine Art Events, Inc., the same people who own and operate the other popular local art fairs, Art in the Park and Art Fair Philippines.
Below are the highlights that you can look forward to at the fair this third week of August:
A Special Exhibit: SLIM at The Lobby
On the cover of MEGA Magazine’s August 2022 issue, Maja Salvador wore a vintage piece by National Artist Salvacion Lim Higgins, more popularly known by her monicker Slim. While it was created in 1967, the dress is timeless and exquisite in its details. Salvador wore several more of Slim’s designs in the cover story.
Now, you can see these dresses for yourself as some of them will be on display at The Lobby from August 15 to 27. The display is curated by none other than the director of Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, painter Mark Lewis Higgins, the late designer’s son. Higgins will also be one of the speakers during the lecture series, MaArte Talks, to be held at Salon de Ning, every 2:00 p.m., from August 19 to 21.
PHxMaArte
While “A Special Exhibit” looks back at the past, PHxMaArte looks forward to the future—one where talented Filipino designers will continuously and passionately create pieces that define the country’s culture and fashion. In collaboration with the PHx Fashion Group, among the next generation of labels who will debut their collection at MaArte at The Pen are BAGASÁO, NeilFelipp, and Kelvin Morales, who had just come off from their stints at Tokyo Fashion Week. Jude Macasinag will also fly in his Manifesto collection, which was recently presented for his bachelor graduation collection at the Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris.
PHx Fashion Group also worked in consultation with SoFA Design Institut, iAcademy, and the Fashion Design Department of the De La Salle University – College of Saint Benilde.
Filipino Textiles
Brands like Filip+Inna and Good Luck Humans have come a long way since they had become MaArte pioneers years ago. Fortunately, there is a growing interest in Filipino textiles and the way brands in the country use them to promote indigenous patterns and techniques.
Apart from the pioneers, MaArte will also feature labels like Rurungan Collective, WYC Wear Your Culture, Two Chic, and Creative Definitions + Lakat Sustainables, to name a very few.
Home Accessories
Ito Kish makes its debut at MaArte. Launching his first furniture line in 2012, Kish has already won several awards and has been celebrated here and abroad for his great designs, anchored on Filipino culture and traditions. Joining him at MaArte in championing Filipino home accessories and furniture are Beyond Borders, DOMESTICITY – TILIA, and the non-profit Gifts and Graces.
MaArte Talks at Salon de Ning
There is much to discuss when it comes to Filipino artisanship and its evolution throughout the years. From contemporary craft and design landscape to pottery to designers in the Golden Age of fashion, different topics will keep MaArte visitors captivated and more informed at the MaArte Talks.
For this year, MaArte at the Pen is expected to have 94 participants.
