Now that the sequel is out, it seems appropriate to reflect on the groundbreaking events of the original film after more than a decade has passed. The plot starts with a mission by the United States Armed Forces to an earth-sized moon in the distant future. A paraplegic Marine named Jake Sully volunteers to fill in for his deceased brother on a mission to the alien planet Pandora. There, he discovers that Parker Selfridge, the chairman of a multinational corporation, plans to force the native population called Na’vi off their world so that he can exploit the forest’s rich mineral deposits.

In exchange for the surgery that will regain the function of Jake’s legs, the protagonist will transform into an avatar to obtain the trust of the Na’vi people in cooperation with the diplomatic mission. Jake begins to form relationships with the locals and falls in love with a native named Neytiri. As the colonel continues his ruthless execution methods, Jake has to stand up and fight for Pandora.

Just in time to end the cinematic calendar of 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to deliver the most breathtaking visuals. The trailer of the sequel’s visual representation showed mind blowing scenes as it marks the much-awaited return to the planet Pandora. Its background arrangement is so vivid and colorful that it becomes a character in its own right, even in the movie’s quieter, intimate moments. The visuals in the trailer went above and beyond current expectations, expanding on the dramatic flair of Jake and Neytiri as they once again strive to save Pandora for future generations.

New dramatic heights

In one of his interviews, James Cameron shared that he wrote the original film Avatar in 1995. Years later, when he began writing the screenplay for the film’s sequel, he wanted to emphasize the transition of Jake and Neytiri’s relationship, showcasing their family as a fortress to which they can return despite Pandora’s war.

Beyond its promise as the motion picture event of the year, Avatar: The Way of Water stands tall for its epic storytelling. The trailer envisioned the premise of the characters we loved from the beginning, Jake’s family dynamics, and a full-on feature of the new characters to represent the new generation of avatars—all things connected in the way of water.

Without a doubt, the trailer’s narrative offered thrills, emotions, and a visionary spectacle, which is why there is a reason to hope that The Way of Water could be even better than the accomplished blockbuster affair of the original film.

Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 16.
