We look back at some holiday-themed sneakers with their notable designs
One undeniable fact is that sneakers don’t really need particular seasons to stand out. Every now and then, hyped colorways are produced out of nowhere and they end up being sought after, talked about, or even both long after they have been released.
But at the same time, the holiday season itself is a solid inspiration for brands and their designs. Sneakers are no different, and memorable colorways have been born simply because of the holidays.
As another holiday season is upon us, we now take this opportunity to look back at five holiday-themed sneaker releases from the past.
Nike Kobe 6 “Grinch”
The Kobe 6 Grinch might just be the holiday sneaker. First released in 2010, it’s as simple as it comes, with colors directly inspired by the Dr. Seuss character. Despite its straightforward approach, it went on to be an iconic colorway for both Kobe and in terms of holiday releases.
And just two years ago, Nike gave it the retro treatment, re-releasing it with an updated Zoom Air cushioning while keeping the rest of the sneaker intact.
Adidas Forum Low “Home Alone”
Home Alone is an iconic Christmas film as it is. Just last year, Adidas paid tribute to it through a collaborative colorway with its Forum Low sneaker. From the base colors up to the smallest parts of the silhouette are references that any avid fan of the original film would instantly understand from the get-go.
Aside from the bevy of small references found throughout, the colorway notably features an insole with photos of the two Wet Bandits in the film.
Reebok Instapump Fury “Grinch”
Another Grinch-inspired design but taken to another level is the Instapump Fury “Grinch” from Reebok. Unlike the Kobe 6, Reebok’s model is given a more chaotic twist with its red neoprene base mixed in with furry green accents.
Concepts x Nike Dunk High “Ugly Sweater”
Boston-based apparel boutique Concepts collaborated with Nike to produce three colorways for the latter’s Dunk High in 2013. Taking cues from the ugly Christmas sweater concept, the silhouettes produced were pretty much the result when a known holiday trend meets footwear.
ASICS Gel Lyte III “Snowflake”
This release from ASICS is fairly simple, yet clean and easy to look at. With red, gray, and black bases, the Japanese brand sought to imitate the look of a shoe that has been used to step in the snow.
