Experience the power of storytelling and be moved by the incredible stories that are coming your way this 2023
The new year is here, and it’s time to unravel more stories as they come our way. Even though magical and heart-warming films are the relevant hits of the season, we can occasionally break the stereotype and choose unpredictable stories with a genuine emotional purge because whether we like to admit it or not, we just need to have a good cry sometimes. These emotional films can undoubtedly help with that.

We have gone through the massive catalog of films and pared down the selection to three heart-wrenching stories for when you want to get in touch with your feelings this year.
Where the Crawdads Sing
Based on a titular best-selling phenomenon by Delia Owen, Where the Crawdads Sing follows a narrative of “The Marsh Girl” with no family, learning to survive on her own in the swamps. Set in the ‘60s, the movie tells the story of a mysterious death of a boy that used to spend a lot of time with Kya Clark. Kya opens herself to a new life until the unthinkable happens—locals who discovered the dead body look to the girl as the prime suspect. There are two timelines in the movie, which feature the court case faced by Kya and the extensive flashbacks of her upbringing and romantic past.
Daisy Edgar-Jones’ role as Kya is a well-crafted ode to the real world, with the movie portraying a heartbreaking coming-of-age story that reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all exposed to the beautiful and violent secrets the unpredictable world keeps.
Olivia Newman’s beautiful narrative is accompanied by a feature song titled “Carolina,” which was originally written and performed by Taylor Swift, and is already nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Motion Picture.
Dog Gone
Any movie buff who’s also a dog lover will agree that there are plenty of reasons to be emotional when a film revolves around a dog. There is just something about seeing a man’s best friend that tugs our heartstrings, and it’s probably because it is a story that highlights faith, loyalty, and unconditional love. The movie Dog Gone is all the more affecting because it is based on a real-life story of a father and son who mended their relationship during a hike on the Appalachian trail to find their beloved lost dog.
The West Wing’s Rob Lowe plays the dog owner’s father, whose character is overflowing with hope as he always reassures his son, Fielding, and wife that they will find their lost dog, Gonker. As the story leads to their adventurous search, Fielding and his father will never get tired as they will always believe that they will soon complete their quest to find their pet.
Extraction 2
One of the biggest movies of 2020 is returning with a sequel in 2023. Chris Hemsworth will be returning to reprise his role as Tyler Rake, and we can expect that beyond seeing him in action, some of his big screen moments can break our hearts. We are well aware that audiences do not usually cry at action movies because their ultimate goal is to deliver thrilling scenes that will draw us to the edge of our seats, but Extraction’s sequel has a different story to tell.
The teaser trailer was released last year, and the story is set on the return of Tyler Rake after nearly dying in a mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh. For his next assignment, together with the squad, they will have to rescue a family from a Georgian criminal. To do this, Tyler must penetrate the world’s most dangerous prison, but when things heat up during the extraction, the plan seems to go south. Hemsworth’s character from part one is brave and never misses a shot. Still, we may expect Tyler’s sensitive side to emerge as his paternal instincts may override his strength if his rescue attempt goes disastrously wrong, endangering more innocent victims.
While there is no set date for its release just yet, optimistic movie devotees are hoping to see Chris Hemsworth in action this January to start the year with a bang, especially since it’s rumored premiere on Netflix around early to mid-2023.
