One of the most awaited events of London Fashion Week was the Burberry fashion show, which was spearheaded by their newest chief creative officer Daniel Lee. Whenever something new occurs, it is human nature to anticipate some sort of improvement. So when Daniel Lee, one of the most talented and award-winning creative directors of his day, made the decision to join Burberry, everyone took note.

It came as great news to many in the fashion world when Burberry officially introduced Daniel Lee as their newest creative director. One of his most successful periods and breaks as a creative director was seen during his stay at Bottega Veneta, which is why everyone was taken aback when he announced his abrupt resignation. In 2019, Lee’s outstanding skill was recognized in four categories at the BFC Fashion Awards: Designer of the Year, British Designer of the Year, Accessory Designer of the Year, and Brand of the Year. In addition to that, he also got the chance to work with other renowned fashion houses such as Maison Margiela, Balenciaga, and Donna Karan. Ever since he made the decision to join the British company, the question that has been on everyone’s mind is whether or not Daniel Lee can achieve the same success with Burberry.

A good first impression

The idea that the British heritage will once again be a part of Burberry was conveyed quite clearly by Lee. Not only was it visible in the pieces that made up his collection, but it was also visible in the most minute aspects of the fashion presentation. Before the lights went down, the VIP guests were offered a hot toddy, which is a traditional British beverage that is made by combining honey, lemon juice, whiskey, and hot water.

Lee also reintroduced the Equestrian Knight logo of Burberry. He successfully showed the versatility of the brand’s iconic logo by having it serve as the primary design element in a series of fashion items without drawing attention away from the garments themselves.

To pay homage to the English rose, roses were also featured prominently in Lee’s most recent collection. Despite its cultural and poetic reference, it did not seem out of place in a modern setting. The fashion pieces displayed a perfect balance of modern sophistication and time-honored craftsmanship.

Daniel said that all he sought to do with his collection was to provide a more optimistic view of Britain’s standing in the world.

“I wanted to hopefully show some positivity about Britain to the world again and remind people that great creativity often comes from here,” Lee added.

In making these choices, the designer has made it quite obvious that he has been paying attention to the comments by consumers in recent years that their collections’ British influences are a little lost in translation, and he seems to be taking steps to address them.

Based on his first collection, it’s reasonable to assume that Daniel will keep showcasing the best of British society in the years to come, while making sure to keep things fresh and contemporary. One of the things to also look forward to is Lee’s knowledge and ability to determine which items will actually sell. Considering the positive feedback from their fashion consumers, it’s not hard to imagine that the company’s sales will increase dramatically. Given his success in elevating the British label so quickly, we can expect more exciting new initiatives and innovations in Burberry  in the not-too-distant future.
