See How These Artists Interpreted Filipino Art Into Makeup Sketches

In this MEGA exclusive, professional makeup artists Justin Soriano, Gery Peñaso, and Janica Cleto paid homage to Filipino art through makeup

The beauty of makeup artistry lies in its ability to turn clean faces into glorious canvases. Think more of it as a wearable painting. For one reason, artists are able to express themselves by adorning one’s features in ways that somehow reflect one’s emotions, visions, or even souls. It opens a creative playground for one to discover and construct one’s identity. Gone are the days when makeup is limited to an asset of vanity. Now, it’s celebrated as an art form.

It’s no secret that there is a thin line that separates makeup artistry and painting. In view of this, MEGA invited professional makeup artists Justin Soriano, Gery Peñaso, and Janica Cleto to interpret selected classic Filipino art through makeup sketches. Justin Soriano

As for this challenge, the professional makeup artist took inspiration from National Artist Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera’s Untitled (Two Sabels) masterpiece. “I based my makeup interpretation on its colors and shapes,” Justin explained. “The fluid structures in black and white give an edgy impact on me. It exudes power, rich elegance, and a neutral state of mind. With some pop of yellow, it complemented the monochromatic palette.”

Janica Cleto

“This look was inspired by the artist Constancio Bernardo’s Wildflower Series II (1977),” Janica Cleto explained. “I wanted to decode the colors of the masterpiece and translate it to an abstract editorial look. Next, I applied the geometric features from his artwork in a linear series for the eye look. As for the lips, I complemented the look with a flattering nude lip to keep the focus on the eyes and cheeks.”

Meanwhile, Gery Peñaso’s entry is an interpretation of Fernando Amorsolo’s “Harvesting Rice” masterpiece.  “The look that I have created is inspired by the colors presented in the famous work of the national artist,” he explained. “I opted for a soft wash of neutral tones for the eyeshadow. To achieve the look, I used the Pure Color Envy Luxe Eyeshadow Quad in Rebel Petals and a deep green accent around the inner and outer corner of the eye using Estee Lauder gel liner in Emerald Volt. For the lips, I chose MAC Locked Kiss Ink in Brazen, a warm terracotta color to honor how Fernando Amorsolo portrayed the warm culture and traditions of the Filipino people.”
