In an exclusive interview with designer Joseph Palma, he reveals how upcycling was involved in the actress’ pieces
Marking another milestone in her career, Belle Mariano recently concluded her first solo concert at the New Frontier Theater last Saturday, July 22. Surrounded by her family, friends, and supporters, the actress sang a number of songs that showcased her buttery smooth vocals and wonderful stage presence. While the eyes of the audience who sold out her show were all glued to her, it’s not just because of her captivating charm. This is because of her outfits, too.

At the concert, the star performer donned distinct pieces with unified elements, making her changes striking yet still coherent. Ruffles, fringe, and sparkling embellishments adorned her outfits, elevating each design with extra oomph. And in an exclusive interview with designer Joseph Palma, he explained the process of how these creations made their way from the work room to the stage.
Fitting ideas into pieces
According to Palma, the whole team looked into the outfits of other pop stars and concert singers for the pegs. “The silhouettes were a bit sexy, but not revealing because we’ve known Belle as a ‘pasweet girl,’” he pointed out. Evidently, Dua Lipa was one of the biggest influences as seen on the Balenciaga and Mugler catsuits that the international singer herself wore in her past concerts. “We want to showcase the popstar Belle during Beloved,” Palma added.
Emphasizing the collaboration between him and the actress’ stylist, Adrianne Concepcion, they had an idea of reworking already-made pieces and adding more bling to them. “My team and I took [the] time to painstakingly put Swarovski Crystals all over the dresses, and we also added some sparkly fringe all over Belle’s blue dress.”
Pressing pieces with ideas
While there is no actual process for the way things are done between designers and stylists, Palma believes that it’s a 50-50 approach. “Sometimes, stylists [would give me] pegs that I should do for their artists. But for some, I send them sketches then they let me know if they want to add some details. Conversations like exchanging ideas for both the designer and stylist work all the time.”
With his philosophy of giving clients something glam and chic with less is more, it is no surprise that his designs fit Belle well. The Star Magic artist’s on and off-duty looks anchor their appeal on versatile pieces like pastel tops and denim bottoms, adding a breath of chicness to them with varying fabrics, cuts, and colors. As Belle’s career continues to mature, we’re certain that the simple glamour style she’s known for shall, too, with designer Joseph Palma on the watch.
