When it comes to boy bands, there are two groups that undeniably dominate the conversation: BTS and One Direction. Which one of us hasn’t belted out the catchy tunes of One Direction or perhaps busted a move to the captivating beats of BTS? There’s no denying that we all grooved to their music.
BTS’ Jung Kook and former One Direction member Zayn Malik each dropped singles “Seven” and “Love Like This,” respectively, over the past two weeks. It’s clear from the songs’ lyrics and music videos that these two gentlemen have taken on a more serious, mature persona, a sharp contrast to their youthful, carefree image. While listeners have had conflicting views, the artists themselves recognize the significance of this turning point in their careers.
Youngest no more
Jung Kook has always been treated by many as someone who possesses so much youth and innocence since he is the group’s “maknae,” or basically the youngest member. That’s why, for JK’s latest song, everyone was caught off guard when he clearly revealed a more mature side of him. From the teaser photographs to the fact that he released an explicit version of his song, it’s evident that the youthful artist we once knew has matured into a guy prepared to experiment with his musical ability.
The Korean idol recently talked about his music during a live broadcast on Weverse. One of his viewers, seemingly out of nowhere, called the song “dirty.” The comment surprised JK, and he immediately questioned the fan who had left it. Did the word he used in the song set guys off or is it because he has shown some skin in the photos? He stated that it’s fine if he acts and talks like any other adult as he’ll be turning 28 next year. In addition, the K-Pop star also mentioned in his other video that he genuinely enjoys hearing the term “hyung” used to call him, meaning “older brother,” because it confirms to him that his youth is past. If he isn’t stepping on anyone’s toes, why should we put limits on this artist’s creative pursuit?

Embracing fatherhood
Fans were likewise surprised by Zayn Malik’s return to the music industry. Although Zayn is no longer a stranger to filming a kissing scene, it was the first time he fully revealed a more grown-up side of himself in the many passionate kissing sequences he shared with Grace Dumdaw. Fans were left in awe and described it as the singer’s most daring image to date. Just like what went down with JK, his followers were also left with a whirlwind of emotions and opinions.
Zayn recently appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where he discussed his music and the new chapter of his life that he is enjoying the most: becoming a father. The “Love Like This” singer has stated that he has learned, during his career, to disregard the opinions of those who have no business giving their take on your work. Clearly, the negative criticism thrown at him right now has no effect on him.
Another topic that the 30-year old delved into was his experience as a proud father, a role that is obviously giving him great delight. The singer shared that his daughter was a major factor in convincing him to take part in the episode as she has been instrumental in teaching him to face his fears and anxieties. He continued, saying he has been working very hard lately to make Khai proud of him. Indeed, Zayn has transcended his youthful image in the past. He has now fully evolved into a distinguished man, set to serve as a shining role model for his beloved daughter.
