The Art of Subtle Deconstruction by Ellis Co

Last July 28, 2023, Ellis Co-presented a new collection that encapsulates the art of subtle deconstruction

The artistic journey of a creative is never easy, but it’s always necessary. It’s the constant act to seeking the unknown to see if their skills can be taken to the next level—a challenging yet rewarding voyage. We see this time and time again as fashion designers continue to present designs that exceed the expectations of many.

This time, another designer has taken us to a new chapter of his career that encapsulates his codes and masterful craftsmanship. Once again, Ellis Co showed us that the pursuit of imagination can lead you to new forms of creativity.

Held at the Midas Hotel in Pasay City last July 28, 2023, we were transported to a world that merged brutalist and futuristic architecture. Silver spikes were blown up on the walls while a cylinder screen took the center spot of the runway. As soon as the show started, the sounds of traditional strings filled the room—a beautiful detail that contrasts with the set design.

As the models walked passed, a story of genesis came to life achieved through their use of construction and color. The first few pieces were finished in black and gray hues that complemented the workout finish of the pieces. Despite the subtle ruggedness, it’s easy to identify the masterful craftsmanship used to create such designs. We can see this on their trousers with open flaps as their detailings or the zipper-finished hems on the dresses.

Another technique we have to point out is their use of knitwear, and it’s a technicality. Constructing a classic knitted sweater is one thing, but taking its traditional approach and deconstructing it proves the designer’s innovative skills.

As the show progressed, it was as if life was breathed into the designs as structure and colors were slowly infused into the collection. Neutral hues like beige and cream made an appearance, while a muted orange also had their turn on the runway. Meanwhile, the silhouettes started to have more structure as seen in their use of A-line dresses to the shoulder-padded pieces.

We’re also crediting their use of the puffer material in an unconventional manner. Every fashion designer knows that using such material can be difficult because it tends to gather. This was expertly avoided by Ellis Co as seen on the clean seams used on the puffer dress and coordinates.

It’s quite a deceiving collection because one might assume it’s rather simple. This is where Ellis Co’s expertise comes in since it’s not an easy gig to marry simplicity with intricacy. Designers such as Phoebe Philo and Issey Miyake are the few who mastered the art of subtle deconstruction, which is why it’s refreshing to see it happen in the local fashion scene. And despite the fashion brand being new to the industry, there is no doubt that it’s already making quite the name for itself.
