Through the Eyes of a Man: Honest Thoughts on the Barbie Film

Possible reveal of plot details. Realization of some truths could be painful. Read at your own risk

Since its release, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has been a worldwide phenomenon. But contrary to its lively and colorful reputation, it’s interesting to note that moviegoers’ emotional responses in their online videos seem to indicate that the cinema experience has left them with a deep and melancholy sentiment. Intrigued by the idea, I saw the film for myself. Here are my honest opinions and sincere reflections on the matter at hand.

Just as I had anticipated, the movie began by depicting Barbie’s vibrant life in Barbieland. Fun. Lively. Exciting. But as the film went on, a subtle shift occurred that prompted serious thought about the ways in which society has confined women and led them to feel insecure and afraid. Seeing your fellow men catcall a woman while she roller skated down the street was extremely unpleasant to watch on the big screen. And it stings much more when you realize that this problem is prevalent in today’s society. Watching it around other women who, unfortunately, might have been through the same thing or even worse was nothing but awful and unsettling.

For many years, Barbie has served as a role model for girls everywhere. However, the film did explore how, in reality, men still hold the upper hand and use their power to unfairly exert control over women, and how this toxic patriarchal mindset has been shaping our culture. Considering the film’s business setting, isn’t it funny that the toys most commonly bought by girls are made by a company ruled by men? Let’s be honest: we’ve all contributed to this destructive culture by adopting problematic gender stereotypes without considering how they affect women’s sense of value and self-worth.

Barbieland

Seeing firsthand the way women in the real world are forced to live in constant fear as a result of discrimination and abuse was completely painful. Think about your mom, sister, and your friends having to deal with situations like these on a daily basis. This pervasive bias has held back countless women, creating a vicious cycle of unfairness that needs to end.

Barbie serves as a reminder that ending systems of patriarchy is everyone’s business, not just the work of women. Men must take a stand against this and help cultivate a culture of respect, empathy, and accountability. No guy can reasonably interpret this movie as an attack. Rather, it should be treated as a wake-up call. Our society is crumbling, and it’s up to us Kens to decide whether to pass on our rotten male philosophy to the next generation or ensure it ends as early as today.
