In a not-so-surprising move, Generation Z is done with these common yet outdated Filipino practices—here’s how they’re ending it
There is no doubt that Gen Z has been rewriting several customs in their own way, and it’s really for the best. Whether we’ve experienced them firsthand or have just become witnesses to it, we’ve seen how certain actions can create an environment of toxicity that can stay there for years. So what exactly are these unwritten rules and how are Gen Z’s changing them up?
“Utang na loob” culture
We’ve heard it all before. We’ll ask a favor from someone? Now we have to repay them with something that has the same value of what we asked for. It may seem simple if we explained it like that, but this is actually a tricky situation to get into because there are those who like to hang those favors above our head for a long time, even if what they did was merely a kind gesture.
This occurs often between family members, and it has definitely been a frustrating thing to feel like we owe someone something just because they’re an older member of the family. That is why the new practice that Gen Z created is to be giving without expecting anything in return. Need a ride home? No worries, I’m free to drive you so you can get home safely. See that change in response? That is what you call an attitude shift.
Over-inviting
Do you recall how your birthdays suddenly turned into family reunions because of the need to over-invite? Yeah, we’re not doing that anymore and it’s something that shouldn’t be taken personally. However, the usual reaction to this is frustrating since the uninvited guests would often gossip about their FOMO (fear of missing out) and why they should’ve been there in the first place.
But when you’re a young adult living in this economy, you’d know that that is not the case at all. Since things are costly nowadays, we have become more financially aware of how to practically cut down costs. No hard feelings—we just need to budget things out properly.
Unconventional careers
The struggle of getting unsolicited advice about what course to take up in college is an occurrence that happens to a vast majority of people. Our parents experienced it from their parents, and we definitely went through the same thing from everyone. While the final say is entirely up to us, we can’t deny the heavy pressure on our shoulders when this decision is forced upon.
Although there are others who welcome the choice from their parents, we’ve got those who go against it. You don’t want to enter the field of STEM? You’re definitely going to hear some unwanted opinions even when you’ve already entered the workforce years later. It’s not an easy decision and it’s definitely not a walk in the park to enter an industry that is deemed unorthodox by older generations, but when you’ve got guts and perseverance, best believe that you’ll get to where you want to be in the future.
