Filipino-American Miss Universe 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel made her debut at the MEGA Ball 2024 in a dramatic off-shoulder ball gown by Mark Bumgarner
A class of multi-hyphenates comprised the sartorial set in one of fashion’s biggest nights, the MEGA Ball 2024. Whether a first-time attendee or a seasoned ball veteran, the annual Pinoy Pride celebratory looks make for indelible fashion. Among the former is Miss Universe 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel who made her debut at the 14th MEGA Ball in a voluminous, silky frock by Filipino designer Mark Bumgarner.

The ball gown combines both traditonally regal fashion elements and modern touches. The classic style continues to reach increasing volumes of iterations. Case in point? R’Bonney’s dreamy Mark Bumgarner creation. The savoir faire of the ball gown includes a touch of old-world luxury while still maintaining modern flair. The designer married the fluid princess skirt with a white draped off-the-shoulder neckline decorated with swathes of ruffles and black ribbons at the sleeves.
“I tried on a couple of black and white gowns by Mark Bumgarner, but I fell in love with the bows and ruffles,” R’Bonney tells MEGA. “It was something different than what I normally wear, so I decided the MEGA Ball was the ideal occasion to experiment and stray from my usual style.”
Her flair for fashion stems from the fact that she is also a designer. When not wearing her creations, the Filipino-American designer champions Filipino designers in her appearances or outings. Despite representing the United States in the Miss Universe pageant, R’Bonney does not dismiss her half-Pinoy ancestry. She often incorporates traditional textiles and fabrics into her design. Stepping into her first MEGA Ball, the beauty queen continues her journey in rediscovering her Filipino roots by way of full-skirted Mark Bumgarner frock.
Cinched at the waist, the structured, voluminous skirt produced a dramatic silhouette that perfectly contrasted the bodice’s tailored and form-fitting shape. Beautifully fusing modern glamor with a subtle hint of the opulent, Victorian Era ball gowns, the silky sheen of the fabric enhanced the regal energy R’Bonney already possesses.
“She’s wearing an archival piece from my LA Fashion Week collection,” Mark reveals to MEGA. “It fits her very well; the ball gown just transformed her into a princess for the night.”
