In an exclusive with MEGA Entertainment, Tirso Cruz III reveals why his drive as a leading man of many decades now comes from the memory of his late son TJ
Even without the cameras rolling, Tirso Cruz III has a role to play. Some might think though, that for one who has spent a good number of decades acting, the veteran actor finds it hard to detach from his star status. But with the realities of life keeping his feet on the ground, he remembers the roles he holds dearest to his core—a husband and a father.

Lessons of the Leading Man
Before he assumed his off-screen patriarchal role, he was a matinee idol first. “In a nutshell, it’s always an adventure that sticks with you,” Tirso says, summing up more than five decades of experience under his belt. To him, it’s no secret why he has lasted this long in the industry; and it’s one tip he willingly shares. “It’s loving what you do. Look at it as a craft. You put your heart and soul into it. I guess, at least I try and I enjoy every moment of it.”
Today, Cruz plays the role of Jaime Sagrado in the newest ABSCBN action-drama series Pamilya Sagrado. Being the eldest in their political clan, his influence and power give him the last say to anything. Unlike his current role, the actor strips himself off the high horse. He rides with the younger ones, watching their techniques and learning from and with them.
The Honesty and Humility of the Craft
For the actor, it’s not just honing his skills that keeps his afloat in the sea of show business. One’s character goes beyond any character that an actor plays. “It takes honesty and humility to last this long. Let’s face it—I’ve been around for quite some time, a couple of generations and decades. But I still want to stay and keep learning,” he admits.
Adding more, he continues to explain, “I consider myself very blessed that I’ve been given the chance to work with the younger generations like Piolo, Kyle, and Grae. I’m still looking forward to being able to stay in this industry, in this craft, for many more years. I look forward to working with a different group of actors and actresses in every project.”
What effect does humility and honesty have on the actor? Understanding the need for change. “I’ve been in the business for so long, and there are things that the younger generations say or do that wake me up and jolt me out of my seat. They make me think, ‘Why haven’t I considered that?’”
His Most Important Role to Date
Over the years, Tirso Cruz III is remembered in many ways—as the other half of a revered love team of his generation, a mix of an antagonist and protagonist that you can’t help but love and hate, an artist who sings and acts. But his best role to date that he will always have the privilege of playing? The family man.
“I’m ‘Love’ to my wife, and ‘Dad’ to my children,” he responds fondly. As his craft co-exists in his being, his realities coincides with his actor duties, too. “Being a father is the root of all my knowledge in acting. It’s based on the reality of life. Of course, the biggest reality is having a wife, having children; watching day-to-day happenings in the world that I can apply to my job.”
The longevity of the Pamilya Sagrado actor is a testament to how fame did—and still doesn’t—get into his head. Musing more about his patriarchal character, he opens up, “In the house, I’m just plain ol’ dad. Sometimes they get pissed at me because I don’t have much time with them. In short, I am your ordinary father as compared to everybody in the room. I’m just a father who dotes on their children, who loves them, who dreams of being able to give everything to them. Of course, the biggest dream of a father is for his children to become a better him.”
The Leading Force of a Man
Going through the changes of time, Tirso Cruz III keeps up with today’s generation through Instagram. His captions, though, reflect a fact about him that will never change—his love for his late son TJ. “Writing to him through my posts started when he passed away,” the actor says, looking back. “Every time anything happens in my life, I equate it to him. It’s like me telling him, ‘How I wish you were still here. How I wish you could’ve seen this one. Knowing you, you would’ve loved playing with me.’ It’s my way of connecting to him. I know he’s not here but deep down inside, in my heart, he’s alive.”
They say loss, particularly death, changes a person. The actor agrees. “There are different levels of pain every time a loved one is taken away from you. But I would say up to now, there’s something different. The most painful one was losing my son. A son is supposed to bury a father, not the other way around. I guess that’s something that pinched and broke my heart having to lay him to rest.”
But more than the loss and the changing times, it’s the love that Tirso and TJ have that no pain nor death can ever change. And that force is what keeps him going—whether he is a leading man on screen or at home.
