Greed

After a series of drama and romantic-comedy films, Nadine Lustre took a 180-degree turn and starred in Yam Laranas-directed drama thriller with Diego Loyzaga in 2022. With Lustre as Kichi and Loyzaga as Tomi, Greed is a story of a couple wanting to elope to escape their provincial life. The two win a lottery—the window of their escape. However, in the middle of their silent escape, greed takes over and things don’t go as planned.

Lustre has further set herself free in this film, leaving the demure, good-girl roles and transitioning to a mature, terrifying, and even downright crazy persona. With such a groundbreaking performance, the actress won her second FAMAS Award for this film. From Greed, she has opened herself up to other genres and uncovered another side to her acting.

Deleter

Nadine’s debut in the horror genre was nothing short of a success. In the same year of Greed’s release was one of the most memorable films of Lustre by far: Deleter. With the direction of Mikhail Red, the film follows Lyra—Nadine’s character— who works as a deleter in an online content moderation office tasked to censoring and filtering graphic media before being posted on social media. She looks to be unfazed by this job, but throughout the story, a traumatic past unfolds that haunts her and follows her even to the office.

Deleter has received several nominations and wins, two of which were the Best Actress awards for Nadine Lustre’s outstanding performance from the Gawad Urian and the Metro Manila Film Festival. The actress has clearly found a genre that not only challenges her but shows off her prowess, and it has only grown since.

Nokturno

Two years later, director Mikhail Red and Nadine Lustre are working together once more for Nokturno, a Filipino folk-inspired horror film written by Rae Red. This project is also a reunion of Lustre and Rae who directed her action thriller mini series Roadkillers.

Nokturno talks of a curse brought by the kumakatok, Filipino mythological beings known to knock on your doors in the middle of the night. Jamie, Nadine’s character, comes back home after hearing about the curse that plagues her hometown and her sister.

Just right on time for your Halloween fright movie night, Nokturno will be streaming on Amazon Prime this October 31.
