REVIEW: Why the Sola Cushion Ultra Matte Foundation is a Must-Have for Oily Skin

Sola just unveiled its newest foundation line, promising to cut down your beauty routines in half. But can it pass the test of oily-skinned beauty skeptics?

Growing up with oily and acne-prone skin, I’ve always dreamed of having a flawless complexion. I’ve worn foundation every day since high school, layering it with concealers and powders in a feeble attempt to achieve perfection. Soon, I realized that piling on these products is what’s causing my breakouts. So, I began to cut down my beauty routine which worked well for my busy schedule. As I scroll through my TikTok page, I stumbled across a product that promises its potential to blend well with my schedule—the Sola Cushion Ultra Matte Foundation.

Having tried on numerous complexion products over the years, I’m not usually the type to buy into makeup hype and trends, but I and the rest of the MEGA team finally caved in and decided to give this foundation a go. Here are our in-depth thoughts about it.

Claim to Fame

The Sola Cushion Ultra Matte Foundation is like a foundation, concealer, and setting powder in one. Formulated with SPF 50+ PA+++ and four types of algae, it effectively protects the skin. It’s also supposed to be non-greasy, sweat-proof, and transfer proof–with up to 18 hours of wear.

First Impressions

The product comes in a squeeze tube component, which allowed me to disperse the exact amount of product that I need. Compared to other types of packaging such as the cushion or stick, the nozzle doesn’t make direct contact with the face. That makes it more preferable for me with acne prone skin.

Upon swatching the product, I find that the consistency is more similar to a tinted moisturizer than the typical foundation in the market. It’s incredibly lightweight, making me initially skeptical about its coverage.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a pea-sized amount of foundation is all it took to cover half of my face and neck. The coverage is buildable and after applying another layer, I didn’t find the need to wear concealer with it, as it effectively concealed the redness around my nose and my dark bags. It’s quite blendable, too, despite me not doing any skin prep beforehand.

Before and After application of the Sola Cushion Ultra Matte Foundation

What I noticed was how it doesn’t even feel like I have product on my face—a matter that other people from the MEGA team agreed on. Rhea, a writer, also appreciated how it’s lightweight and hydrating, but doesn’t feel sticky at all. She also finds that it doesn’t look cakey at all, even if you add another layer of product to your face.

Meanwhile, Isa, our creative production supervisor, said the foundation doesn’t cling to her dry spots. It looks very natural. If you have drier skin, you won’t need to set it as it dries down to a semi-matte finish, giving the perfect cloud skin look.

I noticed that it seems to oxidize a little after a couple of hours of wear, but that may be attributed to the oils in my face interacting with the product. Others didn’t seem to experience the same issue. One gripe we did all have about the product is its limited shade range. But considering how Sola recently released new shades for the Sola Foundation Primer line, we can definitely expect the same for this collection.

Wear Test

I’ve always thought that Philippine weather is a new level of trial test for makeup wearers. All too often, I find my skin oiling up within five minutes of makeup application; that’s why I decided to put the Sola Foundation to the test while working a full-day as a MEGA writer.

From the get-go, the foundation already looked promising as my skin did not show any hints of oiling up while on my way to the office. Other people from the MEGA team shared a similar experience. Even while sweating under warm studio lights during a photoshoot, our makeup didn’t wear off.

The product comes in two shades—sand beige and light beige

I did notice a hint of sheen around my nose by lunch time, but it’s very minimal compared to what I usually get. In fact, my makeup managed to stay intact at the end of the day, even on my 20-minute walk home.

The Verdict

Despite my initial skepticism, I’ll definitely be incorporating the Sola Cushion Ultra Matte Foundation into my everyday makeup routine. It’s easily the most lightweight foundation I’ve tried, while somehow withstanding Philippine weather.

As someone who is always on-the-go, I also find it to be so convenient to use. It allows me to cut down my routines by half in the morning as I don’t have to prep, conceal, or set my face to achieve a flawless complexion. It’s truly a game changer and is definitely worth checking out.
