Looking into new habits for 2025? Consider digging through your old clothes and turning them into something new!
Overconsumption is one of today’s biggest problems. From pieces of clothing to makeup products, keeping up with the trends meant spending more on items that you may or may not use again. To leave the wasteful habit behind, consider giving your old clothes new life by upcycling them into clothes you love. There are many ways to upcycle clothing pieces, but here is a basic guide to get started on your upcycling era.

Making Alterations
If you have a clothing piece left at the corner of your closet due to it being too big or too long, don’t give them away just yet. One of the better ways to keep your old clothing is to alter them for a better fit. You’re more likely to wear your clothes when they fit you in all the right places. If you don’t have the skills to alter them yourself, you can always bring them to an alteration service.

Basic stitches can also go for a long way! You can make some alterations yourself with a backstitch for a simple fix like trimming your jeans, stitching your top for a tighter fit, and more. With a simple alteration, you’ll already be giving your old clothes another chance this year.
Cropping It Close
If a better fit isn’t enough and you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you could always grab a pair of scissors and give it a makeover. If you never liked the sleeves, cut it off for a sleeveless look. Cut off the collar for an off-shoulder neckline, or cut the lower half off for a crop top.

And if the scissors isn’t drastic enough, go crazy with dyes! You could easily learn to tie dye off a video, spray a bit off bleach for that faded effect, or completely change the color. Go crazy with it! Show off your creativity and self-expression through your clothing.
Two is Better Than One
If there’s a piece of clothing you love but no longer fits you, breathe life into it by combining it with another piece, giving you a whole new item with a sprinkle of creativity, a pair of scissors, and some stitches. It would be easier with a sewing machine, but at least you get to learn something new!
The limits are endless: Lace fabric with a denim jacket for a play on textures, combining two halves of button-downs for a half-pattern, half-solid color for a unique piece, and even cutting out squares from different fabrics to create one patchwork jacket. There’s a myriad of possibilities to create new clothes out of the old one. Your only limit is your imagination. Upcycle away!
