The Oscars hasn’t had a fiasco this big since they mistakenly announced La La Land as Best Picture in 2017. In a totally unscripted and unexpected moment, Will Smith marches on the stage to slap Chris Rock across the face. What makes the story even more perplexing is the fact that Will Smith got away with the show of violence without facing charges. On top of that, the actor wins the prestigious Best Actor in a Leading Role award by the end of the night. It was definitely an eventful night for the actor and his family. So, what happened in the first place? Why did Will Smith get mad over a joke by Chris Rock?
Jada Pinkett-Smith has been suffering from alopecia for quite some time now. Recently, she was convinced by daughter, Willow Smith, to shave all her hair off. She’s been hiding the new hairdo underneath scarves for a while. In a brave turn of events, she decided to proudly wear her shaven head to the Academy awards.
With this context in place, it would be easier to understand the outrage that took place. Jada clearly did not enjoy the G.I. Jane joke that Chris Rock threw at her expense and Will acted out on behalf of his wife. Moments after, Will addressed the situation during his acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
He apologized to the audience and the Academy for his actions. The Oscar winner said during his acceptance speech, “Just like they said, I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.” Will and his wife, Jada, have been very vocal about the familial problems they’ve been having. This just goes to show that they are both working on their relationship and the dynamics of it as time progresses.
