Drake Resurrects the Luna Luna Art Carnival Following His $100M Investment

Grown man moves from the Boy as he resurrects the long-lost art carnival

After three and a half decades since its closure, the Luna Luna Art Carnival is making a comeback. With a nearly $100 million investment from Canadian rapper Drake, the André Heller-founded attraction will embark on a North American tour after restoration.

Allegedly, the carnival was brought up to the OVO head by Something Special Studios founder Michael Goldberg. After stumbling upon a site that detailed Luna Luna’s story, it was then brought up to the rapper’s production company, DreamCrew.

“When I first heard about Luna Luna, I was blown away. It’s such a unique and special way to experience art. This is a big idea and opportunity that centers around what we love most: bringing people together,” said Drake in a statement.

According to DreamCrew associate Anthony Gonzales, only a 30-second conversation was needed to bring everyone aboard.

Originally founded in 1987, Luna Luna features public artworks from renowned artists on its rides. Such names include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador DalĂ, Keith Haring, and Philip Glass among others. If not for objection from his peers, even Andy Warhol was set to contribute his artworks.

While set to tour around Europe, it was only displayed from June 4 to August 31, 1987 in Hamburg, Germany. Unfortunately, issues such as financial woes and legal troubles led to its untimely shutdown. Legal troubles included its sale to the Stephen and Mary Birch foundation in 1990.

On its new website, the art carnival is described as “a globally toured extravaganza of rides, games, performances, and other unexpected amusements crafted by some of the most renowned artists of yesterday and today.”

As of writing, Luna Luna is undergoing its restoration in Los Angeles, California. The North American tour is set to kick off in the fall of 2023.
