Mavy and Cassy Legaspi Talk About the Pressure of Carrying On Their Family’s Legacy

Born to veteran actors for parents and facing pressure from living up to a well-known last name, Luminisce brand ambassadors Mavy and Cassy Legaspi take on the challenge on bettering their craft one step at a time

This is an excerpt from MEGA Entertainment’s December 2022 cover story.

Growing up before cameras and seeing their parents come alive with different personas on TV and the movies, twins Mavy and Cassy Legaspi knew that they also want the same blooming career that they have witnessed for most of their lives. But as the children of Carmina Villaroel and Zoren Legaspi, there’s a pressure to keep up and be as equally talented as their parents who have both proven their staying power in a very cutthroat industry.

“I guess there were people who thought that I was already used to showbiz. But I was stressed and scared during my first acting project as my parents are both actors. I knew the expectations were high for me,” shares Cassy as she recalls her first teleserye gig, First Yaya.

While it’s not surprising to see children of actors and prominent showbiz figureheads try their hand in the entertainment industry, questions about nepotism are also starting to gain traction in the Philippines.

“Having this last name isn’t a curse, it’s a blessing. I will always be proud to carry my parent’s last names, no matter if they’re in showbiz or not. Now all I can really say is that their support and love matters to me the most. As long as they’re supportive of my decisions and career, that’s all I can ask for,” says Mavy on his thoughts on the controversial topic. He continues, “If anything, I need to work harder in order to prove that I don’t have it easy and that there are no shortcuts in showbiz. If you don’t have it, you don’t have it. If you don’t work hard, you will not be able to show anything.”

Despite the buzz and criticism that come with being an offspring of the Villaroel-Legaspi brood, both siblings are determined to really show what they can do and forge their own path in acting. “We may be twins, but trust me, we’re very different. And that’s the goal—we want to show what we are capable of as individuals,” says Cassy.

Currently both under Sparkle GMA Artist Center, Mavy and Cassy are kept busy with their own TV shows and appearances. When asked about whether there’s an unspoken competition between them, both siblings are quick to deny that they’re trying to outdo each other. Mavy maintains, however, that it’s all good between him and Cassy. “It’s always a healthy competition with my sister. She pushes me and I push her. We all just want to create our own lane and achieve our goals and dreams. I will always be her number one fan together with my parents.”

As the younger generation of Filipinos would always find someone to look up to, Mavy and Cassy are also leading the path in advocating for self-care. As Luminisce ambassadors, together with their parents, Carmina and Zoren, the well-known family is a testament to timeless beauty and what holistic skincare can do to not just one person but to the next generation.

Cassy shares, “I never really thought that much about going to the dermatologist. I was young and I thought I didn’t need it. And then, as a teen, the breakouts happened and I started to become insecure about it. I’m on TV and everyone has something to say about how I look. After going to Luminisce, it made me realize that taking care of my skin should be a part of my lifestyle. It’s not just to look good, but also to feel good about yourself.”

Mavy adds, “I really thought my acne wouldn’t have any solutions. I’m also glad I have my parents who taught me that taking care of my skin is important and that skincare is not just for women.”

Four years since they officially entered show business, the Legaspi duo knows that they have a lot to learn to perfect their acting skills and become bonafide actors themselves. Mavy says, “I hope to create something of my own. I want to show everyone what I got. But mostly, I want to prove to myself that I can do it, that I can make it. It’s really about me against myself rather than the world.”
