Into the Metaverse: A Collection That Explores the Online World

H&M goes further into design as they launch a collection that can be worn in real life and online

The Metaverse—a world that we dived into as we transitioned from our offline lives to an online environment. It was a sudden change of lifestyle due to unforeseen circumstances, but it was a key that unlocked a world of digital we haven’t ventured into. Many industries harnessed the power of the digital world as they continued on expanding their reach to their audience without the use of the outside world.

Though we are rapidly regaining our old lifestyle, practitioners have no plan in stopping their venture into the online or what many would call it, the metaverse. And as we witness the expansion of the metaverse, a fashion brand launched their own collection that merges the world of the actual and the virtual.

A form of contribution towards sustainability, H&M experiments with new technologies that impose a recyclable system in their use of materials. One particular piece in their collection is the Zero Waste Dress. A name that is self-explanatory, the form-fitting dress went through a zero-waste process—creating a one-of-a-kind pattern we are seeing today. Other pieces that went through a tedious process are their line of faux fur coats. The very faux fur fibers that decorate the coats were made out of plastic pulled from the water, which was then altered into recycled polyester.

In their venture into the metaverse, H&M releases their virtual collection alongside their physical collection. A design partnership with the Institute of Digital Fashion, the collection is powered by the AR fashion lenses of Snapchat. Accessible in the brand’s app, you get to live the metaverse as you try their ultramodern pieces. Innovative and highly expressive, it became a mimic of their physical collection, but with a futuristic twist.

To celebrate the new venture, H&M gathered fashion personalities last December 7 to fully experience the metaverse. Physical pieces were on display for the people to discover, while the screens showcased the virtual collection—a simultaneous occurrence that perfectly encapsulated their concept.
