Patrick Cabral is Turning Digital Fashion Into Reality

After creating AI-generated Filipiniana and Barong Tagalog, Patrick Cabral shares with MEGA that he now aims to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds of fashion

The fashion industry has officially reached the metaverse—a development that had its steady growth during the pandemic and has then gained momentum just recently. What was once an unfamiliar territory became a sudden playground for fashion creatives with its endless possibilities and creative versatility.

Although, we can’t help but fix our attention to Filipino artist Patrick Cabral who ventured into the world of digital with his modern interpretation of the national costume through the use of AI. In an exclusive interview with MEGA, Patrick Cabral took us further into the world of digital and its impact in the arts.

While most have been enjoying the technology AI has been offering to the majority recently, Patrick isn’t a stranger to the digital realm—and we mean the ins and outs of it. He mentioned his participation in the Meta Spark Community, where augmented reality is built for the masses’ experience, to which we are currently enjoying as leisure. Asides from that, he was able to explore various computer generative art communities before AI was explored. Combine that with his artistry that garnered attention because of his intricate hand-crafted art pieces—let’s just say that Patrick has quite an impressive portfolio in both digital and physical.

Though it seems like a handful, the artist expressed that the challenge in AI is actually refreshing to him, like a new world waiting to be unlocked. Patrick shared, “It feels like embarking on a first date with a new love interest. One is so absorbed in the experience that the world fades away.”

The modern iteration of the national costume is a result of his artistry in the digital and physical world. With a meticulous eye that was able to render lifelike pieces with its detail in drapes, texture, and form, Patrick explained that the tediousness behind it was definitely worthwhile. He shared that he was able to navigate through the softwares he used so he could execute certain designs. And while there are certain details that haven’t reached the world of AI, like the butterfly sleeves, Patrick takes it upon himself to draw the designs for the computer to capture the desired silhouette. This led to the creation of his interpretation of the Filipiniana and Barong Tagalog—an output that captured the organic finish of the design with hints of futuristic detailing.

While the concept was captivating, this led to the question of why create the Filipiniana and Barong Tagalog through AI. It’s no surprise that local designers have been making their own iterations of the national costume, and for Patrick, his concept came from personal experience and its possibility to be a must-have. The use of piña under the hot climate is ideal as temperature continues to rise, and he believes that there is potential for it reaching the international market. And since it’s already making its way down the local market, who’s to say that it won’t reach globally? It’s a sentiment that we can vouch for with the current trends.

“If successful, it could become a popular everyday garment, leading to the development of a new industry that could bolster our economy.”

With AI being introduced to the general market, it has definitely made an impact on the world of fashion, where concepts can be executed via digital means that won’t only conjure up would-be collections, but it can also affect the major textile use of the industry. The process of designing often starts with various sample fabrics to determine the silhouette of a piece, but through the use of AI, it can minimize the textile waste, as well as generate efficient techniques. It’s the future of fashion with sustainability by its side. He went on to the topic of sustainability when he shared, “imagine a future where AI can guide designers on how to construct their creations with minimal waste. This would greatly benefit the fashion industry and the environment as a whole.”

Patrick takes this into great account as he continues his development in computer programs that bridge the gap between AI and tailoring. It’s not a new domain for him since he was able to experiment with softwares that had the capacity to produce footwear and costume. So when we asked him about the future of fashion, he simply expressed, “The possibilities are endless and have the potential to transform the fashion industry as we know it.”

Although it would’ve been great to see his digital creations in real life, these are only available in the virtual world. But with how fast technology is moving and the textile industry is slowly catching up, Patrick Cabral assured us that it is possible to bring them to life. Some practitioners have also expressed their interest in supporting Patrick—one of which is philanthropist Mercedes Zobel, who has been known for promoting local artists in the international scene. For Patrick, it’s a significant step closer to making his vision come to lofe as he also seeks connection with the government—which then can also become an opportunity to create an impact in our culture.

With the AI-to-reality project in tow, it’s safe to say that Patrick’s focus is solely on that as he continues to receive such feedback for his creation—a motivation for him to move forward. And as he slowly unfolds the collection, he has no plans in closing any doors to any forms of art and fashion. He capped off the interview by simply saying, “I am excited to see where it takes me. I am open to whatever opportunities the universe has in store for me.”
