With ‘ReimagiNATION’ as its theme, the 72nd edition showcases how Filipino communities transform raw materials into modern lifestyle essentials, together
Community is the heartbeat of Filipino artistry, and at Manila FAME 2024, you’ll see how collaboration fuels innovation and drives the craft forward. More than a trade show, it unites community, creativity, and craftsmanship. It draws on the energy of a collaborative force, spotlighting Filipino artistry where innovation thrives through collective effort and shared vision. After all, it takes a village, and this one is brimming with talent and inspiration.
RELATED: Manila FAME is Where Filipino Ingenuity Meets Global Excellence
Since its inception in 1983, Manila FAME has been a staunch platform for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), helping Filipino products take to the global forefront. Organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), this year’s event pulls out all the stops, with immersive exhibitions and new perspectives that embody the heart and soul of Filipino design.
Crafting a Nation, One Prototype at a Time
At the heart of this year’s exhibit is the Design Commune, which, like the best villages, is all about collaboration. Design duo Rita Nazareno and Gabby Lichauco are at the helm, reimagining everyday objects, extinct creatures, and far-off places.
Their “Beyond Reality” collection showcases 150 prototypes from 25 local companies, prompting you to consider whether you’re viewing a table or something entirely different. With influences ranging from Shibari rope-tying to Ikebana flower arranging, you’ll find lighting fixtures, sculptures, and homeware that redefine the ordinary.
Nazareno and Lichauco, who have collaborated with FAME companies for over five years, bring a refreshing energy to the event. As Nazareno observes, “You can tell through the products there’s a sense of joy”—and that joy is undeniably contagious.
Fashion, of course, is never left behind. Maco Custodio, whose work with 15 local fashion companies brings “Parametrics” to life—an exploration of forms and textures found in nature. His 90-piece collection adds meaning to each item. Custodio, a seasoned designer, challenges the brands he works with to think bigger and deeper. “Narratives give products a different dimension—it creates value,” he shares, a sentiment that speaks to the soul of Manila FAME.
A Nostalgic Look Back to Move Forward
For those who appreciate a good throwback, Manila FAME’s Nostalgia vignette is bound to evoke warm memories. This special exhibition highlights the 1980s and 1990s, a pivotal time when Filipino designs began to gain recognition. Featuring 22 pioneer companies behind iconic products like sinamay hats and shell clutches, it informs us of our roots and how far we’ve come since.
It’s in the Details
The show doesn’t just stop at big, bold ideas, but the small parts that make up the whole. For the first time, Manila FAME introduces Philippine Components, a collection of architectural panels, fittings, and coverings that showcases how even the smallest details can redefine a space. Wall coverings made of natural materials like shell and woven textiles will have buyers mixing and matching with a new level of customization. And just like any village worth its salt, it’s the little things that hold it all together.
Sustainability at the Forefront
No village can thrive without thinking of the future, and this year’s Manila FAME makes sustainability a key priority. “Pinyapel” is a material made from discarded pineapple leaves.
Developed by the Design Center of the Philippines, it’s proof that waste can be turned into something beautiful, functional, and planet-friendly. Local manufacturers like OMO Furniture and Triboa Bay will demonstrate the endless possibilities of “Pinyapel” in furniture, accessories, and décor, showing that sustainability is the way forward.
From the Heart of the Regions
Perhaps the most heartwarming element of Manila FAME 2024 is the Artisans Village, a showcase that highlights the distinct arts, crafts, and traditions of Filipino communities across the archipelago. Curated by designer PJ Arañador, this year’s theme, Uri (meaning “type” or “category” in Filipino), will feature the cultural heritage of provinces like Bohol, Tarlac, and Antique.
The products—from furniture to fashion—showcase the creativity and craftsmanship of our grassroots artisans. They preserve tradition while shaping the future.
Celebrating Excellence, the Filipino Way
At the end of it all, the KATHA Awards will recognize the best of the best, celebrating Filipino ingenuity across categories like furniture, lighting, fashion, and more. It’s an act of honor for the people, the visionaries, and the communities that brought them to life.
Manila FAME 2024 is a compelling awareness event that promotes creativity, collaboration, and community as the pillars of Filipino design excellence. It’s a movement, and it’s one that proves: it takes a village to raise a nation.
