Belle’s newest EP called Somber captures gloom, but not in your typical gray shade, and that’s why we’re loving it
Before Belle Mariano takes on the live stage with her upcoming concert, Beloved, she treated her fans with her newest six-track EP called Somber. According to the actress in her bag raid interview with writer Darla Sauler, the said album is actually the first side of another upcoming EP next year called Solemn. “Hindi mo malalaman ang meaning ng solemn or peace without going through the sombers of life,” Belle explained when Sauler asked her about the concept of the two EPs.

True to her word, Belle’s Somber tracks reflect the different iterations of the mood. Somber is not just about an all-consuming dark gloom and doom, but it is also sudden bursts of doubt in happy moments. It may catch us off guard, but best believe, as what Belle said, the solemn time will come.
With that, here’s how you can listen to Somber if you’re going through the emotion in different ways.
For those who are ready to move
There may be a great satisfaction to realizing you want better things and situations, but there’s also a side of guilt and regret for wanting to leave. If you are now ready to move but are still quite dragging your feet, the songs “Roadtrip” and “Pansamantala” are for you. They both offer a slow and steady melody that comforts you as you decide to take a step towards a brighter tomorrow.
For those who now know better
“Session Road” may carry a lighter riff, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as somber as the other songs in the EP. However, it is actually an affirmation that after a dark cloud comes a silver lining of wisdom. As Belle sang, “If ever I find my way back into love, you’ll be the last to know.” Meanwhile, the actress-singer’s track “Bugambilya” is a symbolism for a blooming awareness of being greater than waiting for someone to come and save you. Adding more depth to the song is Belle singing about two personas, singing about her own story while inserting another story of a girl named “Mary.”
For those who want to press pause
Sometimes, people perceive stillness as an idle period wherein one feels stuck. To some, however, it is a time that gives you all the power to decide and enjoy where you are at the moment. “Running Out of Time” is a youth anthem for those who are yet to figure things out, and Belle sings to comfort you through it all. Of course, last but not the least, “Somber and Solemn” wraps the album’s message of resting where you are to see how far you’ve come. “Maybe this is the way to where you should be,” Belle Mariano concludes the album, giving the listener those words that one needs to hear from time to time.
