Started as an underdog in the game to now an industry disruptor, Doggo CEO Kurt Cheng’s success story ultimately began with the unconditional love of man’s best friend
Fiercely loyal protectors and utterly adorable—dogs are man’s best friend for a reason. From the sassy small ones to the gentle giants, these furry animals have been our companions for centuries now. We give them food, shelter, and make them a part of our family, and in return, they give us their unwavering love—it’s honestly a win-win situation.
Anyone who’s had the privilege of growing up with a pet would know how those balls of fluff can tug at our hearts. CEO of Doggo Kurt Cheng has been a fur parent for basically his entire life. As well-versed as he is in everything relating to dogs given his years worth of firsthand experience, this ultimately inspired him to establish his very own brand that brought premium pet supplies to the local market.
A golden beginning
Kurt’s story began way back into his childhood with his very first dog, Goldie the golden retriever. As someone who grew up with busy parents, Kurt would remember how his dog was always there by his side.
“Being a naughty kid, kapag pinapagalitan ka ng parents mo, siyempre magtatampo ka. ‘Yung dog, nandoon. ‘Andon siya for you for everything. So it showed ‘yung unconditional love ng dog for us. Iyon ‘yung sobrang na-appreciate ko noong bata ako,” he fondly recalls.
Even during trips abroad, he and his family would always gravitate towards anything relating to dogs in their travels. “Actually when we go abroad, ‘yung mga tao pumupunta sa mga tourist spots. [Pero] kami, pumupunta sa pet districts [and] pet shops,” Kurt shares. Seeing as how his dogs have been such a significant part of his childhood until now with his six corgis, Kurt let this be his driving force that led him to the achievement he treasures today.
Going full throttle
With Doggo’s quick rise, it’s quite surprising to know that the success of the local pet care brand almost didn’t happen. Early on, Kurt expressed how he was originally planning on entering a different career path. However, the future—or his parents—had other plans for him.
“I wanted to be a pilot noong bata ako…Medyo pinigilan ako ng parents ko be a pilot kasi I’m the eldest, and siyempre, if you’re a pilot, you’re not here. So, I worked [a corporate job] for a while,” the businessman shares. After setting aside his dream of being a pilot, Kurt decided to pursue a degree in marketing management instead.
After working in the corporate world for half a year, the young businessman was left dissatisfied with his professional life. This prompted him to take a risk and switch careers while getting his master’s degree along with it. Thinking back about his love for dogs, it eventually inspired him to establish his very own brand that catered to the canine community. Thus, Doggo was born. “Nagkaroon ako ng business, tapos nag-MBA ako. Natapos ko naman siya last December,” he states.
Although business is thriving and Kurt couldn’t be more content, he confides how being the man-in-charge definitely has its own ups and downs. “Being a CEO, I honestly feel like you cannot remove your foot from the gas pedal. You always have to be full throttle,” the young leader says. However, this didn’t stop Kurt from living an active lifestyle given his avid interest for basketball and passion in participating in marathons. He even recently joined the Spartan Race, a high intensity series of obstacle races.
With the amount of responsibility running a business entails, achieving a work-life balance is already tricky for some. But for Kurt, it all boils down to strict scheduling. “For me, it’s all about time management. Actually, dumating na nga sa point na my family is calling me a robot, kasi everything should be by the minute, as in scheduled. Pero I don’t see it being done in any other way kasi kung hindi mo siya ganoon gagawin, sa dami kong ginagawa, daming responsibilities, how can you do it properly if you don’t follow strict schedules?” he iterates.
Pawfectly made
Doggo had an unconventional start back in 2019. While brands usually reach out to retailers first before joining e-commerce platforms, Doggo did it the other way around. As a business that was relatively new to the market at that time, working with retailers was a shot in the dark for them so they tried to offer the products directly to consumers instead. Together with his love for dogs and his extensive knowledge about the market, Doggo took off in no time.
“This is a prime example of really not removing your foot from the gas pedal. Kumbaga for a brand like us, you really have to be continuing to grow. If not, competitors will eat you up, especially in our industry that we were fighting against giants. Wala kaming choice kun’di todo talaga,” Kurt explains. Through his unrelenting determination, Doggo quickly rose to the top of the industry and is now one of the top pet care brands in e-commerce platforms nationwide. To what started off with no retailers, they’re now in 200 retailers and has opened two physical stores.
Doggo has really nowhere to go but up as the brand is set to launch their very own line of dog food. Aiming to export their products worldwide, the canine care brand strives to proudly represent the country by providing premium local products to fur parents all over the globe.
Not only does Doggo provide your beloved pets with world class products, they have also partnered with Pawssion Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehoming, and rehabilitating dogs in need. With a compassionate man behind the scenes, it’s only natural to see how Doggo is not only a brand devoted to helping your beloved pets have the best life they can get, but also has the heart to aid the unfortunate ones that also deserve love.
Give your fur babies extra love with Doggo’s premium pet supplies by visiting their physical stores in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig and Festival Mall, Alabang. You may also shop online through Shopee and Lazada. For more information, feel free to check out their website, Facebook, and Instagram.
