SB19 ignites Filipino pride in their rendition of Ryan Cayabyab’s “O Bayan Ko” at the MEGA Ball 2024
This year, MEGA’s celebration of Philippine Independence Day marries culinary artistry with fashion craftsmanship—two industries that underscore the evolution of Filipino culture. With the theme Fashion + Food, MEGA awarded nine Pinoy Pride awardees who have excelled in the Philippines’ food and beverage sector. It is only apt, then, that the performance of the night also beams with national pride. SB19, known as the Kings of P-Pop, made music a delectable experience for every MEGA Ball guest with their fervent rendition of the national anthem and Ryan Cayabyab’s O Bayan Ko. Joining the five-piece boy group were three acclaimed chorale organizations—Los Cantantes, Kammerchor, and The Philippine Meistersingers, and musical director and composer Rony Fortich.

National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab’s “O Bayan Ko” was first performed at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1998 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Philippine independence. 26 years since, the P-Pop royalty has revived the song—and it still rings with the same patriotic fervor. The composition expresses love of country and the need to speak out against inaction and apathy on pressing national issues. Pablo, Stell, Justin, Josh, and Felip prove their remarkable ability to evoke that ardor and spirit with their vocal prowess. Also appointed Youth Ambassador of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2021, SB19 continues to mold the music industry both locally and globally, pioneering an era of Philippine Pop where it receives a broader appreciation worldwide.
As the five members were accompanied by a hundred voices from Los Cantantes, Kammerchor, and The Philippine Meistersingers, the performance was a soaring, anthemic number featuring Rony Fortich’s musical excellence. “It’s an honor. Kinakabahan po kami, pero siyempre gagalingan namin,” Pablo tells MEGA, and that is exactly what the group did—the soulfulness of the piece allowed every word they passionately sung to hover lightly and sink in.
Having also graced the cover of MEGA’s June local global issue, SB19 continues to make impressive inroads as a rare, exceptional musical act. Bringing to life the Filipino musical maestro’s notable work with reverence and pride further cements their status as the standard of Philippine music.
