In a film that tells the classic tale of choosing between career or love, Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards play Joy and Ethan, respectively, who try to navigate both paths. Both dreamers with different ways of seeing things, they meet in Hong Kong and help each other grow.

As one of the most challenging and mature roles that both actors had played, this was also their first film together as a pairing. Hello, Love, Goodbye presents a breath of contemporary angle to the stories of domestic helpers and hustling Filipinos, depicting what changed and what hadn’t in the past. It’s definitely a good idea to watch the film right before the sequel to catch yourself up for the upcoming Hello, Love, Again.

Barcelona: A Love Untold

What happens when two individuals want to keep going after their respective pasts? This is the theme that Barcelona: A Love Untold portrays in the characters of Ely, a grieving architect who’s working his way for a master’s degree, and Mia, a psychology graduate wanting to start fresh from the life that she lived in the Philippines. Apart from the realities of Filipinos living abroad, the struggles of strained family relationships and the aspiration of proving oneself are also tackled in the Spain-set movie.

Barcelona: A Love Untold Official Trailer

Released in 2016, the motion picture coveted the Best Picture at the 65th FAMAS Awards. As of writing, this is the last directorial project of Olivia Lamasan in her series of foreign city-set films.

Anak

Directed by Rory Quintos and written by Ricky Lee, Anak features veteran actress Vilma Santos as Josie, a mother of three who works as a domestic helper in Hong Kong. Spending years abroad, time has passed for her and family, especially for her daughter, Carla, played by Claudine Barretto. Regarded as a box office film, Anak is known for showcasing the head-to-head confrontation between Vilma and Claudine. Besides the point of view of a working parent, the movie also represents the stories of children who grow up with mothers and fathers working in another country.

In My Life

Vilma Santos plays yet another woman who aspires to find life in another country, and this time it’s in New York. After establishing herself as a headstrong woman, she faces uncertainty in a new place and in the changes surrounding the lives of her children.

What sets this film apart from other narratives is how it tackles the crisis of older mothers as they and their children get older. In My Life also discusses homosexuality as Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz play lovers. If you need a movie that is surely for both parents and children, then this is for you.

Milan

In the midst of looking for his missing wife in Italy, Lino (Piolo Pascual) meets Jenny (Claudine Barretto), a formidable Filipino figure in the migrant community. Personal relationships are not a necessity for Jenny, not when she’s busy building a career. The two start a professional relationship, which then grows into a love affair. But when they have found refuge in one another, reality slaps them both across the face. Just like any other Olivia Lamasan classic, expect dramatic scenes with quoteworthy dialogues from the characters.

Dubai

A 2005 box office drama shot in the UAE, three Overseas Filipino Workers become connected through friendship and love. Raffy (Aga Muhlach) has been working in Dubai for nine years. His younger brother, Andrew (John Lloyd Cruz) comes to the country and meets Faye (Claudine Barretto). The plot twist? She is Raffy’s past lover.

With a love triangle narrative between brothers besides life’s realities from working abroad, this film can surely tug your heartstrings. You can surely watch this with your sibling, but remember: share the tissues, but not the partner.

Sunday Beauty Queen

An entry to the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival, the documentary film also premiered at the 21st Busan International Film Festival in the same year. Sunday Beauty Queen talks about five expatriate domestic workers who dream to be Hong Kong’s beauty queens—a tradition for works during their weekly day-offs.

Director Baby Ruth Villarama intends to share these OFW womens’ journey to independence and self-worth in a tight place such as the said country. This is a great documentary for all the OFWs trying to find a life outside work, and will for sure inspire you to pursue your dreams while working.
